About this test

In the late 1970s, psychologist Christina Maslach found that burnout wasn't one single symptom but a phenomenon built from a few distinct axes. She and her colleague Susan Jackson went on to build the Maslach Burnout Inventory around three core dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization (cynicism), and reduced personal accomplishment. This test adds two more axes โ€” physical symptoms and work-life imbalance โ€” and uses 16 questions to find which face of burnout shows up most strongly for you right now.

The five axes reflect how differently burnout can show up from person to person. Emotional Exhaustion means your passion for work has faded, small things irritate you more, and getting out of bed feels genuinely hard. Depersonalization means you've grown cynical toward people and work, shutting your emotions down and running on autopilot. Reduced Achievement means nothing feels satisfying anymore โ€” work that used to feel meaningful now feels pointless. Physical Symptoms means mental fatigue is showing up in your body, through chronic tiredness, headaches, or trouble sleeping, and Work-Life Imbalance means the line between your job and your personal life has broken down, so you can't stop thinking about work even after you clock out. Most people carry a bit of two or three of these at once, but usually one axis is loud enough to drown out the others.

Which axis stands out actually changes what genuinely helps. If depersonalization dominates, the fix may have less to do with resting more and more to do with rebuilding real connection with people. If physical symptoms dominate, sleep and physical recovery may need to come before any mindset work at all. Sorting the axes this way gives you real, actionable information โ€” far more than a simple 'are you burned out or not.'

That said, these five axes are a simplified, playful take on a formal academic scale, not a clinical diagnostic tool in themselves. If your result lands on physical symptoms or emotional exhaustion and that state has stuck around for a while, treat it less as something to resolve with a self-check and more as a signal worth bringing to real rest and, if needed, a professional.
